Live and let live

Feedback from Shri Gauri Prasad Das, Asst.Manager, SBI, Bolangir
Mobile No.9238300223

Shri Das joined the bank in 1984 in clerical cadre. In the year 2009, he was promoted to Junior Management Grade Officer.
Shri Das has passed through very hard days. Financial hardship and hunger for earning more money had taken away peace of his mind. He was feeling completely withdrawn.
After undergoing this programme he has been immensely benefited. He has gained confidence and overcome frustration. He has become extremely sociable and joined philanthropic organizations to help the poor and downtrodden.
Just one month back, on his way back to home he found a small boy weeping helplessly and running on the street. He caught hold him and asked about his parents’ whereabouts. Immediately, he came to know that boy was an orphan. Shri Das took him to his house and advised his wife to take care of the boy like their own son. Now, he has admitted the boy into a vernacular school. The boy who was feeling no one in the society has dreamt of his own identity. He is also reading well and also very compatible with Mr.Das and his family members. Shri Das has determined to help the boy completing his higher study and stand on his own. This has given tremendous amount of contentment to Mr. Das and his wife. Mr. Dash has honestly admitted that this sort of attitude to live and let live is, no doubt, the impact of the Citizen SBI Programme.

My new Journey with my new born.

Last week for me was a complex mix of deep anxiety, sorrow, excitement, dejection, joy and many more feelings. But you are mistaken if you have guessed that there were auditors sitting in front of me pointing out every nitty-gritty of the proposals I may have handled. The fact was that I was away from the hectic schedule of Bank handling proposals or preparing irregularity or scratching my head how to handle a particular account which is showing signs of NPA etc. It was cold morning of 30th November 2009 I was putting myself on second floor of a hospital before the operation theater sitting on a cold blue bench shared by my mummy and young brother, the night before I could not sleep as doctor suggested me to wait and then she will take a call whether to have a normal delivery or cesarean delivery whole night I was worried and one line of sonography report “Cord found around the neck” came to haunt me and kept me awake it was in the morning doctor decided to operate, sitting on the chair all good-bad thoughts came to my mind and I asked for help from every deity/ god/ form of god from east and west. People in the hospital had their days as usual sweeper busy sweeping the floor, nurse busy taking care of patients some smiled as if consoling me others were indifferent, caretakers of patients busy bringing in Tea etc every one eased but for me it was opposite. The doctor came out with her soft voice said “Congratulation you have a baby boy, your wife is fine” believe me or not for me she was more than an angel and most adorable person on this planet earth my heart was put to relief.

Now after a week when most of things have settled down for good my heart takes me to those moments of complex mix of feelings one thing is for sure being part of SBI family I always felt strong and was firm that in this new city were I am a little more than one year old I am not alone and have a big SBI family to support me. I just cannot conclude this piece of writing without affirming once again my gratitude for the comfort that was brought to us (Sweta and me) by the organization, people like Jagat Singh Bisht Sir , Hemant Karaulia Sir to name few who make this organization vibrant, brought us solace in our days of suffering and our strong desire to make known our thanks to everyone. The organization culture and programme like SBI CITIZEN bring a lot of connect in our personal life directly relevant at times when we are put to pressure. Thank you State Bank, I along with Sweta and the new born are its proud citizen.

BORN CITIZENS

CITIZEN SBI
SIR, I TEND TO THINK MOST CITIZENS ARE "BORN CITIZENS". THERE IS THIS MUCH AND NO MORE THAT ONE CAN DO TO CITIZEN-ISE ONE'S SELF. ALL THE INSPIRING INCIDENTS ARE REALLY GOOD TO READ AND ASSIMILATE BUT HOW MANY OF US EVENTUALLY PUT THIS INTO DAY TO DAY PRACTICE IS WHAT MATTERS. YOU SIR, FEATURE VERY PROMINENTLY AMONGST A FEW( YES SADLY A FEW ONLY !) CITIZENS I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW DURING MY SBI JOURNEY SO FAR. THE WHOLE OF 1993 JAN 17TH (WHEN MY MOTHER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER) TILL 29TH DEC 1993 (WHEN SHE DIED) I WAS ON LEAVE FOR A GOOD SIX MONTHS AT LEAST. IF I NEVER FELT ANY PRESSURE OFFICIALLY, IT WAS BECAUSE OF YOUR MAGNANIMITY(Sir now when I say this I really mean it since I am neither a Sycophant nor am I drunk at present !). I WAS ABLE TO BE WITH HER, MIND AND BODY, WHICH IS THE LEAST A SON SHOULD DO FOR HIS MOTHER.I HOPE HAVE ALSO TRIED TO DO MAXIMUM JUSTICE TO THE TASKS ENTRUSTED TO ME. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME (OR IS IT THE PERPETUAL PESSIMIST IN ME "SULKING") COP WAS NOT EXACTLY SOMETHING WHICH MADE MY "HAIR STAND ON END". IF CHANCE PERMITS, MAYBE I WILL COME OVER TO ATTEND ONE OF YOUR SESSIONS. SORRY FOR BEING THE PESSIMIST THAT I AM !!!

Thank you Murali for the kind words. I also remember you as a true citizen and an angry and restless young man - angry and restless with the System. I am not sure whether I could do anything for you at that time but I clearly remember that when it was time for you to leave remote Waidhan for distant Kerala to see your ailing Mother, the Branch Inspector arrived at our branch. Instead of leaving for the railway station which was about 25 kms away, you put your suitcase down at the branch and started taking jotting in the inspection sets. I was asking you to leave as it was time for the train but you kept on insisting that you would contribute your bit and only then leave the place. I still remember the feeling of guilt and remorse you had in your heart and eyes when you had to leave us at the crucial juncture. Your contribution in arranging the State Bank Cricket Utsav (see, we had already conceived the T-20 notion then!), World Environment day march (attended by all Citizens of Waidhan, remember the policemen surrounding the SP and the SP insisting on walking with us!) and SBI Anand Mela is simply unforgettable! Because of your support, we could form Lions Club of Waidhan to bring all the local Industrialists, Traders, Doctors and Bankers together on a social platform. Thereafter our profits grew three-fold and inspection rating went two notches up. And, so on and so forth... People were scared to go there but we enjoyed our stay there and that's why all of them still remember us and keep in touch. You have made me nostalgic about the good old Waidhan days! I wish you all the best in all your endeavours! Love to the young Citizen at home! Bye bye. Take care. You are precious!

I am today able to identify the total compensation I worked for unknowingly

“ Compensation “ , what do we understand by compensation ?, what are the various kinds of compensations an individual gets on his / her performance ?, what do we get with a particular kind of approach towards the work one performs ? such several questions were never thought about me when I performed my job .

I as a Bank employee worked for the organization with my whole hearted approach , sincerity and dedication in the task I performed and was always fully satisfied with what I did , how I did , and the resultant achieved always brought in the satisfaction , happiness , built up the inner strength in me which we so term as inner fruits now after our orientation programme of Citizenship .

Compensation the terminology now understood and that too with its threes types and Citizen SBI looking forward to total compensation , looking forward to all three kinds of compensations for the total fulfillment of life , I can clearly , very well relate to experience I had 13 years back in my work life .

I joined my place of posting SBI Chandimandir Branch , a so called rural branch , but very near my place of residence chandigarh and where I could commute daily from my residence. Branch Manager knew me before my posting to his branch , he was aware of my attitude towards work , my approach to the work . He was quite desperate to get me posted to his branch and did try for my early posting to his branch from zonal office. I had worked with BM earlier for 6 months in some other branch and was very friendly with him when it came to working for the benefit of the organization, both of us were committed towards our goals which need to be achieved.

Working in the branch for quite some time the day came when branch was under inspection , Branch had never been rated Efficiently run branch for quite long time , when we started our work during the inspection days in the back of our mind , me and BM , we were always thinking can we get efficiently run for the branch , is it possible. Well attending to auditors , working late hours in branch and making all the colleagues work in team , extending helping hand to all the staff members who really required, coming on off days , holidays to finish the balancing work resulted in audit over and on the day the audit report had to be handed over to Branch Manager , auditor had called for meeting of all the staff members , briefed about his observations during his stay in the branch , commented about the excellent team spirit and the attitude towards work of all the employees of the branch . When the score branch got and the rating was announced , to my utmost surprise the branch got efficiently run , I was so happy .

After the meeting all the staff members congratulated me for having contributed towards it , enabling the branch and the branch staff to function in the desired manner , motivating them , being there with them to support them when required . I was so happy that while accepting their congratulations I started crying , tears started rolling down my cheek from nowhere. That was the day when I experienced tears of joy , the tears of fulfillment .

Now I can relate after my orientation towards Citizen Ideal , that it was the Citizen behaviour and I was working towards Total compensation , Transactional compensation I got as my salary and allowances, Contribution compensation I got when I enabled all the staff members to work in team , extended desired support to them , enabled branch to get the highest level of inspection rating and Fulfillment compensation I got having done a job which brought in satisfaction , happiness , contentment and built in faith in my inner capabilities which turned me into a very confident person capable of accomplishing desired goals.

I am today able to identify the total compensation I worked for unknowingly.

IMPACT OF CITIZEN SBI PROGRAMME

In one of the classes at SBLC, Guwahati today, I was just going around the groups when they were writing their programme feedback. I saw one of the participants not able to write and i went towards him and told, you can write your feedback even in assamese language. At that time, he told he cannot hold the pen and write due to some medical problem. When I told the facilitator that I will write the feedback for him as narrated by the participant, the facilitator told that another paritcipant in the group had already helped him by writing the feedback as told by the other participant. I was moved by this gesture of the other participant and felt that the programme has made an impact on participants which was apparently visible in the act of helping others. I am sanguine that this could happen only due to the impact of the programme and nothing else. KUDOS TO CITIZEN SBI!!!!

Citizen Conviction

I'd like to share a small incident.

Today, the 2nd of Dec being a wednesday, there was no Citizen programme. After having my lunch at 2 p.m. I came down to the dining hall at 3 p.m. feeling a bit sleepy and desparately wanting a cup of tea. However the canteen guys were not yet finished with the cleaning and were in no position to provide any tea as of then.

So quietly I walked towards the gate of the SBLC and told the watchman on duty of my predicament. He then asked me to wait for a few minutes and there he was back with a big glass of tea from the tea stall about 100 metres away from the SBLC. Then out of nowhere he took out two small plastic glasses and poured the tea into the two glasses, one of which he gave me and the other he took for himself. Then he brought out the only chair from the watchmans' room and made me sit on it while he parked himself comfortably on a stool nearby. And so we had the tea together with our dicussion ranging from topics about his family, his village, his salary and the deductions and so on and so forth.

Well this is equality and the being aspect in play I thought. Of course, such sharing with the subordinate staff is not uncommon in our bank but to do it in front of the public right in front of the SBLC gate and especially with the perennial risk of a DGM or a GM or maybe a CGM suddenly landing up requires a certain amount of confidence. And this confidence in me has definitely come from this Citizen SBI project.

Well, that is conviction I should think. I am now waiting for the day when I'll be feeling sleepy again...
