"This is a programme which we'll carry forward to our branch and do something there.." - Syed Mudassar Ali

Contribution Projects Lab at SBLC, Indore

The first contribution projects lab has just concluded at SBLC, Indore. While all the participants are happily enjoying snacks and tea, one participant is standing slightly aside. I ask him why he is not joining others for tea. He tells me that he is observing Roza.

He is Syed Mudassar Ali from Khirkiya branch.

He appears very cheerful and says - Usually we attend programmes and they begin and end at the SBLCs. This is a programme which we'll carry forward to our branch and do something there. We have learned about contribution handshakes and contribution projects. We'll go back and share the concepts with our entire team and try to do our best for the customers. I am sure we can do a lot for them after this programme.

It is already 6.20 pm and he has to go to the masjid nearby for iftaar. The energy and cheer radiating from him generates a lot of hope for the future of this programme..

"We shall collectively endeavour to make contribution behaviour a way of life in our region"

Feedback: Contribution Lab

I attended the contribution lab, along with my branch managers and other unit heads of Region 2, RBO, Khandwa, at State Bank Learning Centre, Indore from 7th to 13th July 2010.
Contribution handshakes and contribution projects are the important approaches during this lab. It is intended to be applied in branches during day-to-day transactions. I intend to use it extensively.
As RM, I would like my units to go for contribution projects voluntarily and extensively. Because it gives my team collective fulfillment. It will also delight my customers.
I participated enthusiastically in all sessions and enjoyed in particular the Nukkad, Dimag Ki Batti, TV Interview as every participant made it vibrant and interesting. Most of the branch managers contributed during the sessions. Their rich experience made the sessions meaningful and interesting.
We shall collectively endeavour to make contribution behaviour a way of life in our region.

A NEW EXPERIENCE OF CHANGE

I am a very old customer having 20 years of connection with SBI. I have availed a cash credit of Rs24.00 lacs for hardware trading and a Housing Loan of Rs9.00 lacs. During last 20years we have seen the Bank very closely and have bitter, sour and sweet experiences.

We remember, during our initial days, we used to pursue the field officer and other concerned higher officials to get our work done. Then a period came, when we have witnessed, the branch manager and Field officers coming to the unit and requesting the good entrepreneurs like ours for enhancement of their limit. But during last 4/5 years, we have seen there is more and more customer centric attitude of bank’s loan officials as well as general staff. Most of the staff members are now trying to help us at their level. Whenever we come with huge cash, the guard and messenger help us to deliver the cash to cash officer for counting by extra staff instead of keeping us in the queue. By this our money is safe and our time is saved. Such types of helps are coming forth more and more from the staff members during last 3/4 months.

It is worthwhile to mention one incident where I have seen the concern of the officers and staff for my case. Three months back, I required an overdraft of Rs 5.00lacs urgently to meet the margin money to participate in a high value tender of Rs3.00crores.I was desperate, thinking how to arrange money within one day. So I have told Sri Suresh Biswal, Spl.Asst, Field Officer and Chief Manager. Listening my problem, all of them started to help me at their level like filling up of application form, arrangement and consolidation of documents. Finally the chief manager personally went to processing cell and got my proposal sanctioned on the same day to enable me to participate in tender. I really felt happy to to see the team effort of the branch staff to help me. This type of team help was not there earlier in the branch and visible during 3-4 months in the branch. Really the branch is undergoing some change.

HOMELY EXPERIENCE IN SBI

I am a trader, dealing with ITC and Tata Telecom products. I am also a Government Storage Agent. I have availed Rs91.00 lacs credit from Cuttack City branch. My connection with SBI is only 2 year’s old. Earlier; I was with United Bank of India. But the basic reason for which I shifted from them to SBI is that, in UBI we have to run after their people to get our works done. And it was time consuming. But in SBI, we tell our requirement and their people assist us in various ways to get our work done.

Another thing I have experienced in SBI is the concern for the customers from the lower level to higher level employees. Regularly we come with heavy cash for deposit; beginning from the guard to cash officer, every body shows their concern for security of our cash and early receipt by extra staff in security area.

One recent incident is an example of SBI’s further changed scenario. Four months back, one day casually I have expressed my desire for a Maruti Estilo car loan to chief manager in front of some clerical and officer staff. Then it has become their team effort beginning from application to sanction of the loan. I had only put my signature on application and handed over some documents. The type of help extended by clerical staff to officers in the branch was exemplary and very much satisfactory for customers. I experienced some sort of change in the behavior and dealings of the branch staff in last few months. I feel homely while at this branch and trying to bring my other trader friends to the fold of SBI.

"It seems this is the effect of your Citizen SBI programme..."

Pulikkal Mukundan Menon is my childhood friend. We still keep in touch with each other. He is a senior account officer in the defence establishment.

During the past few months, whenever he called me, it so happened that I was in Mumbai or Hyderabad or Gurgaon or Bhopal, busy with the Citizen SBI programme. He wondered what this programme was all about and I told him something about the programme. I remember him asking me initially whether this programme would also benefit the customers of the State Bank.

Yesterday, I received a call from him. He told me that he had deposited a cheque received from LIC in his daughter's name (who works as a Scientist with ISRO) at the Ranjhi (Jabalpur) branch. On the third day, he got a call from Mr A K Chatterjee, a senior assistant at the branch, saying that he had mentioned a wrong account number on the slip and that he wanted to confirm the account number which he had already traced on his system.

Then, Mukundan added, " It seems this is the effect of your Citizen SBI programme. The officer was very courteous in his dealing. Earlier, SBI functioned as a public sector enterprise. Now, the staff gives proper response."

DISCOVERING THE CITIZEN WITHIN

Empty your cups and rediscover yourself” said one of the initial slides shown in the recently conducted Citizen SBI programme. I looked around for cups but found bottles instead on the table (innovative ways to prevent you from taking the statement literally). The next few slides had some thought provoking words like enlightened self interest, spirit of excellence, spirit of service and so on. I began to wonder, are these reflective words really a part of my system, a part of my cup?

But thanks to the design team, it takes the script forward unfolding concepts like tree of fulfillment, joy of contribution and many other interesting facets. Within two days, this programme touches your heart, it awakens your brain and redirects your eyes to your inner self. In the rat race today we tend to look at everyone, everywhere and everything around and afar but we forget to look at ourselves, the closest one. This programme is a wonderful concept of awakening oneself, a speed breaker in our mad rush to rush all the time.

The case studies, role plays used may be just examples but every participant could identify with it, could fit oneself somewhere in it either in personal or professional life. Each one of us has been Amar, Akbar or Anthony (characters in one of the case studies) at some point of time, in some relationship. It’s circumstantial and situational.  The case study reflected our quest at moving from Good(Amar) to Better(Akbar) to the Best(Anthony).  We have to look for the grey shades of Amar within us, in our relationships, in our behavior.  We need to set Anthony as the benchmark so that we can touch the heights of atleast Akbar.

Citizen SBI is designed innovatively to encourage the ‘citizens’ of the bank to participate actively, to act, to react, to speak up, to suggest and more importantly to reflect within.   It is an ideal sequel to the Parivartan programme which set the ball rolling by encouraging employee participation through a series of workshops seeking employee feedback and making them feel a part of the Organisational change that was happening in the Bank.   If Parivartan was Organisational Development, Citizen SBI is a step forward - Organisational Development through People Development .

This forum was used as a platform to shed our inhibitions. People came with different mindsets to the programme.   Some with apprehensions, some with prejudices and some with a positive attitude of learning something new.   For a few, it was a break from the monotonous office work, to exterminate their stress and rejuvenate themselves.   Kudos to the Design Team for structuring the programme in such a way so as to ensure breaking the ice, encouraging, mingling and cross-fertilization of groups.   This led to the spirit of team bonding, networking, and developing of new relationships with unknown colleagues.

The structure of the programme was devised with a lot of thought put behind to ensure that there was constant interaction between teams and it did not have the monotony of a one way training session.   Listening was important but participating, interacting and reflecting was more important. The constant churning of groups, activities involving each and every person in the group was exemplary.

As the day progressed, we felt each individual blossomed, opening up through the activities he participated in.   I remember a member in my group who was an extremely shy person, introverted, inhibited and probably low on confidence and had never participated in any formal workshops/role plays earlier. Not used to the participative kind of training made him bit queasy. The first activity that was to be carried out was to narrate an incident in your life which shows the shades of citizen in you.   The entire group started discussing, but our man's contribution was restricted to only smiling and nodding.   We could see he wanted to participate but there was something in him that was pulling him back. Dilemma of what if he says something wrong, fear of being ridiculed but an intense wish to be a part of it.

Under the effective guidance and handholding of facilitators and encouragement from his group members, he played a major part in the role play, so much so that he crossed the time limit given.   His childlike enthusiasm and new found vigor was so captivating that none had the heart to stop him and he went on and on. And at the end of the role play, the radiance on his face was full of exuberance. His face glowed under the applause he received for his performance.   It gave him immense confidence and happiness. His search for inner fruits had begun at that very moment.

The great Greek philosopher Aristotle had stated that ‘Happiness’ is the only true inner fruit that a human looks for. We do have other values like family, freedom, joy, money, status, security, growth, wisdom, truth, sense of identity and belonging, dignity and virtue.   But finally, it all centers on ‘The Happiness’ of the person, the inner fruits that he gets, the intrinsic value that he is in search of. So much of importance is given to the material needs that our intrinsic needs get overlooked. These two days gave us time to introspect, analyze the layers of façade that we have put on for years together, to question the basic purpose of our existence.    It helped us distinguish between our extrinsic and intrinsic needs, define and reset our values.

Citizen SBI is truly a positive attitudinal transformation programme.   It shows us a path towards Positive Contribution with a combination of Head & Heart which activates our left and right brain representing logic and emotions within us. Yes, at the end of this two day session I felt I had emptied my cup and got a larger cup only to be filled with inner fruits, fruits of joy, fruits of happiness, fruits of contentment and fruits of inner peace……

I have begun my journey to discover the citizen within me…

An Opportunity To Serve The Society

While interacting with one of the youngest participants during the last Citizen SBI Programme at SBLC, Guwahati on 19.02.2010, she told, "this programme helped to realise the unexploited inherent potential in me. I could also make a SWOT analysis of myself and resolved to work on my weaknesses. The programme will definitely bring in an attitudinal change in me to serve others better."

She is a post graduate in Geology and has joined our Bank as Probationary Officer leaving a well paid job at ONGC. I was surprised with the answer she gave when I asked her as to why she left ONGC where she could have continued working in her area of interest. "Sir, my father and all other relatives are in ONGC and I have been seeing them all these years. There is not much of recognition and opportunity to serve the society. In SBI, I get a social status and recognition. I can also serve the society".

Ms. Nawab Shehnaz Famin Haque
Probationary Officer
SBI Dibrugarh

Thanks to Citizen SBI!

An incident that I can never forget is the Divisima Cyclone on 19.11.1977.

I was doing my PG at Hindu College, Masulipatnam. Thousands lost their lives and people were left homeless. We formed a batches of 15 students to serve people. Under the leadership of the Superintendent of Police Shri Veeranarayana Reddy, we went to distant villages wading through sludge and distributed food, medicines, clothes to the needy. Financial help was provided by NGOs like CARE, CASA & Ramakrishna Mutt. Everyday we used to carry huge luggage and waded through mud to distribute the items.

The above incident is clearly etched in my mind. I received a certificate of appreciation from the SP, which I still display proudly to my children to make them understand the importance of serving society.

Although, I have received numerous appreciations, none of them were as fulfilling as the deep sense of satisfaction I derived by serving others. Desire to serve others has once again been recharged with CITIZEN SBI program and I am grateful to our Chairman for arranging such an excellent program which will stir the inner being of all the employees.

Touching Feedback

CITIZEN SBI PROGRAMME FOR SUB-STAFF

It was the time of getting feedback from the participants of the CITIZEN SBI Programme for sub staff conducted by me with Shri J Sivakumar conducted at SBLC Nungambakkam, Chennai on 04.02.2010 & 05.02.2010.The feedbacks of following two participants are very revealing and touching:

1) One Messenger from a metro branch told the gathering that previously if he tried to do some customer services other than his normal works, other branch functoneries used to discourage him and tell him to do only his alloted works. But after these staff members attended the Citizen SBI Prpgramme, he could find some changes in their attitudes, particularly towards him and other substaff members whenever they (the substaff) trid to help the branch customers. They are now encouraging the substaff to help needy customers in addition to their routine works. The moment he told this many participants got to their feet and endorsed his views. They told that they also found changes among many staff members after their participation in the Programme.

2) An Armed Guard told that he used to be very harsh with one of of his sons as he was not studying well. (It so happened that in the role play of father guiding his son in doing his Project work about Pollution Control, the Armed Guard acted as "FATHER".) He told the participants that after he acted as a father who understood his son's problems and guided him,he realised that though he was harsh on his son, he had never tried to understand his real problems and sort them out.He became emotional and told us that from then on he would treat his son with warmth and understanding.

I have taken feedback from Mr. Jameel Ahmed, General Manager, Chhattisgarh Gramin Bank, Raipur who has attended the programme a few days back at Raipur. He narrated his feelings as under:

The programme is wonderful. I could learn not only how to earn various fruits but how to get total fulfillment in life. Apart from Bank, I understood my responsibilities towards my family and society and resolved to discharge the same with determination.

I am infact feeling delighted. The various activities/excercises gave a lot of visualisation in life. As a result I am feeling that there is life beyond daily routine and started enjoying the life.

Phone a Citizen Friend (1)

It is proposed that the facilitators call random numbers of participants who have attended citizenship orientation programme earlier and get their feedback about the programme, what they found valuable in the programme and how the programme has impacted them. The feedback thus obtained may be shared in this forum. To start with I called Ms Neha Sharma, a probationer, posted at SMECC, Raipur(Chhattisgarh). She attended the programme on the 7th and 8th of December at Administrative Office, Raipur. Neha told us:

"I found the programme full of activity and enjoyed the various group tasks and video clips. The live examples of our staff members were very authentic and, as a new entrant in the bank, I learned a lot from them. I found the duty vs. contribution learning unit to be the most valuable one. I have realized that performing mere routine duty is not enough and one has to go beyond and make a positive contribution in all spheres of life. I feel I have become more sincere and dedicated after the programme and look forward to more such programmes eagerly."

Hi SBI Citizens

Last week ,i had my Citizen SBI training at SBLC Raipur. The word training makes you imagine a classroom with a trainer and the content in the form of books/presentation... but this one was completely different , we had no trainers but facilitators. It helped me to analyze myself. Who am I and what am I doing here are very simple as questions and become very difficult to answer when asked to. Diffcult only because we never ask these questions to ourselves. Sense of belongingness can't be simply added to a person so easily, we just need to have it or it has to be there....But atleast we can realize this feeling....we hardly think about unintentional consequences, maybe because we are too sure to make things happen in our own way or we simply don't wanna think about them... How much do we relate to ourselves and the organisation we work for? certainly, there are no exact parameters to measure it but if u can just feel it- You make a mark. Citizen Sbi prog. raised all these questions which a person normally forgets to ask and answer in normal course of life..

CITIZEN SBI - SELF DISCOVERY & REALISATION

Let me give my brief introduction to all followers of this blog. My name is Vineet Paliwal a Probationer of 2009 batch . Although i am new to this Organisation but i have earlier worked all along last 6 years in Merchant Navy as Navigating Officer. Since start of my jouney in SBI i had great respect for SBI not only as a great organisation to work with but to its belief in young generation and for probationers like me it gives some relief as investment made by SBI in Training of manpower , enhancing professional skills and even giving Honorariums to encourage people to Learn new subjects apart from general banking. This is beyond comparison to any other organisation( even in those i have worked earlier. Latest initiative in line was this Programme called CITIZEN SBI.
Citizen Sbi in my view was a programme meant for Self Discovery , Realisation and Actualisation although the examples taken for better understanding were from Daily banking . Never ever Earlier I gave so much time to myself to Know me further. The results were surprising at times. Be it Think tools , Compass matrix( i cant recollect exact name) ,or the Placards on which we analysed far Results of our Acts done intentionally or un-intentionally, Tree of Fulfillment which i have often experienced at times but was not so clear about it.
Well For me it was a great Learning experience among other members attending the programme. Not only i realised that People can actually bring Change in their attitude although its quite hard a task , But for some they require a push and this Programme may actually provide most of us a thrust well required to do our jobs and deeds in a more Holistic way. Like very well said by one of our facilitator that we need to realise on which step we actually are Towards being a Citizen Sbi in a True manner.
Even now i felt That this Programme has actually compelled everyone to bring a change in their outlook abt life, job , society and to greater extent Nation as a whole. This Programme has actually sown seeds of THE TREE OF FULFILLMENT in everyone , although the qty. may vary among all. I am desperately waiting for its two more phases as Self Discovery is an ever continuing process and i believe these two forthcoming phases may actually take us to further exploring our inner territories.
Finally hats off to SBI in taking such a great initiative which will prove an ever lighting LIGHTHOUSE guiding our souls and innerself in right manner in Vast oceans of life.

VINEET PALIWAL, RACPC, INDORE

MY FEELINGS AFTER ATTENDING THE TRAINING CITIZEN SBI

Many a times, we concentrate on our KRAs and neglect values parameters.
For me, I feel that Lack of knowledge of self is the cause of non fulfillment.

After attending the training programme on Citizen SBI (Rather I should say, it is more than a training), I got an opportunity which I have missed earlier to understand myself and self evaluate all states that we inhabits and find answers. The training helped us to understand myself as a human being, draws attention to what is within me inherent and intact.

The training acts as a catalyst to act on my inner feelings and emotions. Now, I have realized that I am being my natural self. I am sure; it has touched many hearts and makes them happy.

‘Man’ refers to the biological classification of us. ‘Human’ refers to ‘God like Man’. So, the more human we are, the more “God like Man’ we are. Being human is more important than being fanatical.

The Tree of Fulfillment is a tremendous tool not only for myself but also helped my children. My daughter is in a dilemma whether to go for pursuing M.Tech or doing a MBA from a reputed Business School after completing her B. Tech. With the help of this tool which she fond very interesting to analyse the benefits. It has given her some confidence and mental satisfaction regarding her future career.

Citizen SBI - An Enriching Experience

CITIZEN SBI- AN ENRICHING EXPERIENCE

For the past few months we were hearing a lot about Citizen-SBI but never did I realise that this programme would be so widely different fron the other training programmes, so meaningful and so richly enriched with new and meaningful thoughts and concepts starting with the concept of citizenship, the tree of fulfillment and the various other concepts leading to practising citizenship and the mindset compass. The shared citizen moments, the spontaneous clapping, the Citizen tune and most of all Citizen Casper have left me spellbound. The programme has given me a new vision of life especially the inner and outer fruits.
