Behavioural change
It is a wonderful and tremendous experience to facilitate a programme in Citizenship Orientation Programme. Every programme is a new programme and gives a lot of new insight into the various ideas and concepts.
After facilitation of 25 programmes, I am feeling a lot of changes in my behaviour.
The behavioural change has been noticed by my family members. One day my daughter told me that now a days I behave cool, calm. Earlier I was a bit impatient but now I have a huge amount of patience and self confidence which I got as inner fruits from this programme.

Walking The Extra Mile
All of us went through and through the thirteen foundation notes, twelve (match-box)reflection booklets, all the external readings on facilitation and also the Ramakrishna Mission book. This gave a deeper understanding and assimilation of the basic tenets of citizenship which were shared in small groups and then in the whole class. The facilitators were engaged in this activity till well past midnight and some of them again got up early next morning. It was a delight to see the entire campus of learning centre bustling with activity from well before 9 O'clock in the morning till late hours in the night. There were so many computers and laptops bustling with activity - videos were being watched, presentations were being prepared and meaningful, dep discussions were being carried out. All the facilitators were so involved and engrossed in the activity that the master facilitator thought it best to move out quietly in the evening and enjoy a boat ride in the beautiful lake. There was no one to give him company as every soul was searching something deeper. It was to be seen to be believed!
The pace was set right at the beginning of the facilitators' workshop when the task of facilitator gym was explained and shared with even before the scheduled time of commencement. They could sense that it was not just another programme. Then came God's real blessing in the form of our Chief General Manager Shri M Bhagavantha Rao's inspiring inaugural address in which he touched the very core of the citizenship initiative by saying that a life ends when an egg is broken from outside but when the egg is broken from inside, a new life begins! That put everyone in the true citizen facilitator mode.
Some facilitators were observed drifting towards the 'I Know' mode initially as they had already conducted over two dozen programmes. They were made to put on their creative hats by being given the task to silently reflect and try to tell the story ( as different from the concepts, analysis, structure etc.) of the Citizenship Orientation Programme which they found really challenging as it demanded deep insight, reflection and creative skills. Most of them came out with essays, opinions and analysis of the programme and were asked to think over again and come up with their stories on the next morning. This way the mind cups were effectively emptied!
We also carried out group discussions on what could be the appropriate dress that the facilitators could wear while conducting the programme, how they could manage the class room environment optimally during the programme, how facilitators could deliver the programme with energy and passion on an ongoing basis and what is the programme goal framework.
The facilitator gym was a beautiful and unique experience. Every group presented their units in an innovative way. There were quite a number of outstanding role plays to bring out the basic learnings. I have no hesitation to say that the facilitators have mastered the art of role playing and they enjoy that too! We could complete all the eight units and realized that the objective of capacity and confidence building was more than achieved. As far as coming together as a community is concerned, the facilitators worked in so many groups and mingled with each other well. Towards the end of the two-day programme, we tried to gauge this by calling a volunteer and asking him to tell the names of as many facilitators as he could. Lo and behold, he was successful in telling all the thirty-six names correctly!
Of course, we started with a walk through of the new version on the first day and running the exercises and sharing the best practices. The new version was deeply admired by one and all. Overall it was a great, fulfilling and intense experience which we'll cherish for a long time.

- BHOPAL CIRCLE, FACILITATORS GYM
23.11.09 TO 24.11.09, SBLC, BHOPAL
FACILITATION
In the facilitators gym the following vital points on 'Facilitation' emerged from the group of facilitators:
OBJECTIVE-
i) To know the deeper and richer aspects of facilitation.
ii) To empower the facilitators to do better facilitation.
POINTS EMERGED:
ü The facilitator must not acquire and transmit ‘concepts’(like in training) but share an ‘ideal’ and see that the participants assimilate the ideal (like the one done in the old Guru Kula system).
ü The goal of facilitator is to enable each individual to choose to practice ‘Citizenship’.
ü Even if the participants do not accept the ideas, a proper facilitation will cut through and open up the minds of participants to think upon the ‘Citizenship’ idea.
ü Thoughtful Silence in the class is Welcome sign in facilitation.
ü A facilitator enables the ‘discovery’ (i.e. participants generating their ideas) by helping the participants and making ‘discovery’ happen in them in the spaces provided in this ‘structured discovery programme’.
ü Facilitator must not add his/her own theory or idea during the programme. Any of his/her opinion must be discussed by him with other trainers/facilitators outside the class in private.
ü Facilitator can use creativity by helping more number of group members to share, highlighting the important points of the programme, being respectful and listening to the group members’ opinion and counter opinions.
ü A facilitator must make the group realise through his practicing the ideal that he/she is authentic.
ü A facilitator must be thorough in the ‘Programme Know-How’ (being aware of the questions, difficulties, errors in conduct of the programme) as well as ‘Facilitation Know-How’ (knowing the subtleties of facilitation and his/her own doubts).
ü ‘Facilitation Know-How’ is a 'potent tool' and is of great value for class and for the facilitator. The more the facilitator matures in this tool; the relationship in family and with others will get transformed.
ü Through the process of sharing and inviting participation, the facilitator in turn will discover for self.
ü No day a facilitator can dare to say ‘I Know’.
ü A facilitator must not give place to any kind of ‘Negativity’.
ü A facilitator must identify and use the ‘Natural Citizens’ from the class (those who readily understand the key idea of the programme, what they intuitively know, the programme will make it explicit –‘Tacit to explicit’). Due regards must be given to them. The facilitator can use such Natural Citizens as ‘Role Models’ in the class as they will strengthen the foundation of the programme. - A facilitator must not invite ‘any analysis of the past’. It is to be emphasized that ‘Creating a Future’ is our interest.
ü A facilitator must clarify the objections of ‘Early Citizens’ (they want to become citizens, but require some clarifications). Their objections can be better clarified by relating the situations to their experiences and using experiences of others in the class.
ü Facilitators must have 'conceptual clarity' on the important terms/ aspects used in the programme. They can enrich their clarity through repeated readings of the concepts, foundation notes and going deeper into them.
ü Facilitators must emphasise upon ‘Change starts with individual’ and ‘Change starts from within’.
ü Any person who is deeply non receptive to any idea despite best facilitation efforts must not be given much mental importance. Facilitators must not conflict or get hooked to such person.
ü A facilitator must help participants in self managing and ensure that the thinking process is in a self organizing manner.
ü A facilitator cannot eliminate prejudices but just recognize them.
ü Facilitation is the ability and readiness to listen to participants’ actual words, accept silence with understanding, maintain accepting eye contact with the speaker and note down individual’s insights verbatim.
ü Facilitation requires the willingness to focus on what the individual is saying rather than what the facilitator is going to say next. With a view to reveal participant’s real insight, facilitator must push occasional answers for clarity.
ü A facilitator must not limit his/her self-identity to present realities, but expand it to include his/her highest potentials. Facilitation is a path to realise ones own potential.
ü A facilitator is a fellow journeyman on the path to self discovery.
ü To succeed we must 'connect'. A facilitator must try for a cohesive team to comfortably and quickly acknowledge, without provocation, their mistakes, weaknesses, failures and needs for help. They must also recognise the strengths of others, even when those strengths exceed their own.
ü Facilitators must invite participants to assimilate fully the meaning and consequences of every activity as ‘No assimilation, no Facilitation’.
ü To be credible facilitators own behaviour should reflect these values.
ü The facilitator is the servant of the group, not its leader.
ü A facilitator works to ensure that the group accomplishes goals through offering process suggestions, enforcing ground rules agreed to by the group, keeping discussions on track, protecting group members from attack and ensuring participation by all members.
ü A facilitator is the battery cell of the group. It does not matter if in the process of facilitation for evolving the group energy, facilitator forgets and surrenders everything known.
ü A facilitator at its best or as therapist finds himself/herself closest to inner intuitive self, in touch with the unknown in him/her. In this slightly unaltered state of consciousness full of healing, the facilitator feels that he has reached his/her inner spirit and touched the inner spirit of other.
ü A facilitator is successful when each participant becomes an energy source.
ü A facilitator manipulates (to manage or utilize skillfully) deliberately so as to maximize full participation, to minimize individuals dominating or interrupting the group and to optimize the group’s performance and satisfaction.
ü A facilitator must see things as they are. Rather than how he/she wants them to be.
ü A facilitator must accept others as they are. Only then will he/she be able to accept himself/herself as he/she is.
ü The facilitator is an ‘igniter of minds’.
ü A facilitator must have extraordinary respect for the other. He must affirm the wisdom of each person, honour the collective data, celebrate the completed work of the group, and at the same time affirm each person in the group individually.
The groups also shared some of the experiences from facilitation through examples. - Contributor- Bharat Keswani, Facilitator, SBLC, Jabalpur

A New Life
Facilitators' Gym for Bhopal Circle
The Facilitators’ Gym for Bhopal Circle was held in SBLC Bhopal on 23rd and 24th November 2009. The event filled programme was inaugurated by our Chief General Manager Shri M. Bhagavantha Rao with an inspiring talk, which set the tone for the Gym.
He touched the very core of the Project Citizen SBI with his profound remark “When an egg is broken from outside, a life is finished. But when it is broken from inside, a life begins.”
Our CDO Shri Rajeev Mahajan also joined us and gave his blessings to the workshop, which was conducted by our Intervention Leader Shri Jagat Bisht.
The two days that followed were filled with activities like practice and presentations on the Video Triggered Reflection modules of the Facilitators’ Gym by different groups, presentations on topics from Foundation Notes by two-member teams and individual reflections. All these enhanced the Facilitators’ experience while the feeling of belonging to a community and sharing of best practices provided fresh insights to all of us.
A fun-filled yet intense and valuable experience for all those who were a part of it!

Great Initiative
The Citizen programme is indeed an unique initiative and I am not surprised at all the superlative comments given by the readers of this blog. However, it may be a great idea if people wrote in to say how the programme has made them do something, anything, differently. You know, the other day someone wrote an email to the Chairman (citizen.chairman@sbi.co.in) saying that he was so moved by the programme that he gifted the snacks packet he had been given at the end of the day to the rickshaw-puller who took him home. A very small gesture, but all of us who read the mail felt good.
In fact I have noticed that after getting familiar with the Programme contents (I reported only about 2 months ago), I 'manage' my temper better. My driver has the habit of keeping me waiting and although I am trying to discipline him, I have stopped being unpleasant (at least that's my assessment!!) while doing so.

The Power of 'Being'
He briskly rose, and without hesitation he left the room, emerging into the thick backstage throng of local reporters, photographers, security personnel, and students - the seekers, the curious, and the skeptical. He walked through the crowd smiling broadly and greeting people as he passed by. Finally passing through a curtain, he walked on stage, bowed, folded his hands, and smiled. He was greeted with thunderous applause. At his request, the house lights were not dimmed so he could clearly see his audience, and for several moments he simply stood there, quietly surveying the audience with an unmistakable expression of warmth and goodwill. For those who had never seen the Dalai Lama before, his maroon and saffron monk's robes may have created a somewhat exotic impression, yet his remarkable ability to establish rapport with his audience was quickly revealed as he sat down and began his talk.
"I think that this is the first time I am meeting most of you. But to me, whether it is an old friend or new friend, there is not much difference anyway, because I always believe we are the same; we are all human beings. Of course, there may be differences in our faith, or we may be of a different colour, but we are human beings, consisiting of the human body and the human mind. Our physical structure is the same, and our mind, and our emotional nature are also the same. Wherever I meet people, I always have the feeling that I am encountering another human being, just like myself. I find it much easier to communicate with others on that level. If we emphasize specific characteristics, like I am a Tibetan or I am Buddhist, then there are differences. But those things are secondary. If we can leave the differences aside, I think we can easily communicate, exchange ideas, and share experiences."
With this, in 1993 the Dalai Lama began a week-long series of public talks in Arizona. In his public address, the Dalai Lama spoke of the importance of relating as one human being to another. He seemed to have an uncommon ability to put one completely at ease, to create a simple and direct connection with a human being.

Strengthen...Brace-up...Inspirit
Strengthen the Citizen SBI inside us. Each one of us has it hidden in ourselves,as I mentioned in my earlier post. We just need to strengthen it further.
Brace-up ourselves against all odds...the situations may not always be under our control but our Mindset would be. The mindset compass is an eye-opener. I had new revelations about myself through it and have already started working on the recommendations I wrote.
Inspirit our work and the whole environment around us. Lets not only be Responsive but also a Value contributor and create opportunities for Transformative Contribution.
I would like to thank the fountainhead of this programme, our Citizen Chairman for giving us this wonderful gift. This programme is a source of re-birth of the positive contributor inside all of us. The path is laid and the journey has started. The commitments are now stronger and the leg-pullers have taken a back seat.
I have always been and am further more proud to be a Citizen SBI.
Sachin, Sreesanth, Dravid
The AmarAkbarAnthony exercise was over. And, I just happened to mention Sachin as a particular type of citizen. Then, there were some views and counter-views and a lot of discussions full of energy.
It can be a really interesting debate.
May we have an open quiz in this forum:
What type of Citizen-Cricketers are the following and why?
A. Sachin
B. Sreesanth
C. Rahul Dravid
(Off and On, Value Contributor or Evolving)
We shall be glad to have your responses.

Citizen SBI-a strong progression initiative.
I am just waiting forward to my next day at the programme tomorrow...starting the day with loud clappings and carrying the same energy the whole day.
Let us all share our experiences on this forum and enrich each other further...Contribute!!!
CITIZEN SBI , Gift to all those who are willing to be Strong, Joyful & Expanded.....
Now a days in every organisation employees are working under an ever-increasing amount of pressure and it has become the necessity to boost productivity while managing personal stress. We are lucky enough to be in the organisation like SBI which is taking care of personal growth rather than professional as personal growth itself will bring the professional & organisational growth as side effect.
Citizen SBI is a training program that helps not only to reduce workplace stress but to increase mental clarity, creativity , overall happiness, moreover how to expand our boundaries from I to We. It helps us in knowing that how can we make the life beautiful and peaceful with the inner satisfaction. Most important feature of this training is that it is common for all the age group.
This will definately bring 2 major changes in everyone:
1. A smile born from inner stability .
2.More enthusiasm and dynamism in activities .
This training programme reminded me of the Art of Living Courses (Basic & Advance) in which different processes are used to discover your true self as our 'personality layers' make us hide this truth & the "natural You" which is beyond all inhibition & negativity.
ONLY U CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE …. So join Citizen SBI as soon as possible.

Unique Programme
One officer told me at SBLC, Bandra - "Sir, we feel exhausted after working long hours day after day. Please arrange such programmes at least once a year for us. Otherwise we will go mad."
The Classroom
The participants find the sitting arrangements very conducive to learning, sharing and discussing. Their involvement in the programme gradually builds up. They begin to see the value in the contents. Slowly self-realization dawns and they yearn for more. On the beginning of the second day, the enthusiasm and radiance is worth watching. They return after the programme fulfilled and content.
V Srinivas
I have never witnessed such deep commitment to any ideal in any individual in my entire life time. He is the person whom I can openly adore, admire and follow. To me he is more than any yogi or saint. It's God's grace that we have him with us. I feel proud and privileged to be associated with such a genuine and meaningful cause - Project Citizen-SBI.
It is really difficult to express my gratitude to him in words. I wish him all the very best in all his endeavours!

So, once again, I invite all cititzens to contribute and enrich this blog.

Fresh HR Initiative
Business Standard Reporter / Mumbai September 2, 2009, 0:43 IST
The country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), today launched a new programme, Citizen SBI, aimed at attitudinal change and transformation of its employees through a series of human resources activities.
The project which was designed by Illumine Knowledge Resources over the last 18 months will be implemented across all SBI staff over the next 2 years.
“The project has four stages, the first of which, namely citizen orientation was launched today. The other three stages are customer fulfillment, market engagement and a vision programme, especially aimed at the senior management of the bank, senior management citizenship,” a bank official said.
SBI, which had launched project “Parivartan” in 2007 - a 100-day programme to increase communication skills of its managers, sees the new project a extension of the previous one.
The 2007 project, which within an year after OP Bhatt took the reigns of chairman, was also aimed at stopping SBI’s falling market share.
Since the global financial crisis broke out post September 2008, SBI’s market share in both deposits and loans has increased substantially.
“Citizen SBI project seeks to bring behavioral transformation by seeking more active role from the employees. The consultant has identified facilitators who will train the staff over the tenure of the project,” the official said.
