Vets gave up, but love put Em back on his feet

Em is a rare survivor. Run over by a car in August 2008 and given up as a hopeless case by veterinary doctors, this dog is today up and running - thanks to his own will to live and lots of help from Anjali Kakati, a south Delhi resident who had been feeding him for three years.

Wanting to give Em a chance to ‘‘live out his own destiny’’, Kakati bought a special wheelchair and started nursing him in the hope that doctors would be proved wrong.

They were. Em, who had been paralysed by the accident, can now walk and run without support. The wheelchair had been bought from Chandni Chowk so that he could move and exercise while he was recovering.

Said Kakati: ‘‘Em is one of the many stray dogs that I feed in CR Park. One day in 2008, I noticed that he was limping a little. Thinking that it wasn’t anything major, I forgot about it. However, soon after that, he went missing for three days. After frantic enquiries, my sister finally discovered Em near the market area. To her horror, his face was smeared in blood and pus was oozing out from it. He was too weak to move. But when she called out to him he still tried to wag his tail.’’
